The effect of initial internal energy of small polyatomic ions on the extent of surface-induced fragmentation was investigated. Small hydrocarbon ions were prepared running a gas discharge Colutron source in a hydrogen-methane mixture. These ions turn out to be relaxed in collisions and possess little or no internal energy. The same ions were then formed by electron impact in a low-pressure Nier-type source thereby having internal energies up to about 1 eV. The different internal energy content of the projectile ions had a considerable effect on the extent of fragmentation upon surface collision due to the fact that the initial internal energy of the projectile ions is entirely preserved during the surface collision. Moreover, HD2+ formed in the Colutron source turns out to preserve rotational energy that finally determines the decomposition of the molecule into D+ + HD or H+ + D2 upon surface collision.
