Quantized Stark-Shifts and Implementation of a Novel Type of Quantum Gate — •Mark Riebe, Stephan Gulde, Gavin Lancaster, Christoph Becher, Jürgen Eschner, Hartmut Häffner, Ferdinand Schmidt-Kaler, and Rainer Blatt — Institut für Experimentalphysik, 6020 Innsbruck, Austria

Our measurements probe the comparably small AC Stark shifts induced by off-resonant coupling to a motional sideband of the 729 nm S1/2D5/2-transition of a single trapped 40Ca+-ion [1]. This light shift is proportional to the motional quantum number n, i.e. the harmonic oscillator level in which the trapped ion is prepared. We have prepared the motional Fock states |n⟩=|0⟩,|1⟩,|2⟩ and |3⟩ and measured the corresponding quantized AC Stark shifts. The ability to induce well defined state dependent level shifts allows us to implement a universal quantum gate in the 2-qubit computational space composed by the ion’s electronic and motional degree of freedom. Thereby only the dispersive effect of the level shifts are employed, without peforming any population transfers.
