In the present work charge-exchange pumping as possible mechanism for XUV–lasing is investigated. For basic studies the well-known reaction C4+ + HC3+ + H+ has been chosen. C4+ ions are produced by fs–laser ablation of a carbon target. The ablation plasma interacts with a pulsed gas jet close to the target. The experimental set up allows to study the process at high densities (above 1016 cm−3) of the particles, which is necessary for XUV lasing purposes. Obtained results bear strong evidence that selective charge-exchange pumping of C3+ ions (n = 3 levels) was indeed observed. The line intensities leading to the emissions from n= 3 to n=2 (31.2 nm, 38.4 nm, 42.0 nm) at distance ≈ 1  mm from the target and density of H2 gas jet above 1016 cm−3 exceed the initial recombination pumping by more than 3 times. Comparison of ns, ps and fs laser pulse ablations shows that the effect of the gas jet is stronger for the shorter pulses. In preliminary experiments with the Al 23 target at the same conditions a dramatic order of magnitude increase in intensity of the 2p-3d (λ=23.8 nm) and 2p2−2p3s (λ=37.4 nm) transitions of O3+ and O2+ ions respectively is observed.
