Ultrafast hard x-ray source with high repetition rate based on femtosecond laser pulse irradiated audio cassette tapes — •Jörg Kutzner, Michael Hagedorn, Grigorios Tsilimis, and Helmut Zacharias — Physikalisches Institut, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, Wilhelm-Klemm-Straße 10, D-48149 Münster

An ultrashort hard x-ray point source of high repetition rate (1 kHz) is presented based on commercial chrome dioxide audio cassette tapes and ultrashort pulses of a Ti:sapphire laser. Hard x-ray emission is observed on the irradiated foil side as well as in transmission providing a source with nearly 4π illumination. Spectroscopic investigations show strong chrome Kα emission at hν=5.41 keV in addition to a weak bremsstrahlung continuum. Photon fluxes of 107 Cr Kα photons/sec are generated with 30 fs, sub-millijoule laser pulses. The transmission geometry allows unrestricted access to the radiation source and ensures jitter free conditions in time-resolved measurements. The low cost conversion media with easy set-up make this source a promising tool for x-ray applications
