Photoassociation of Ultracold Molecules in an Optical Dipole Trap — •Stephan Kraft, Marcel Mudrich, Jörg Lange, Matthias Staudt, Roland Wester, and Matthias Weidemüller — Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Heidelberg

We are investigating the formation of ultracold Cs2 molecules through photoassociation in a far detuned optical dipole trap. The trap is formed by the focus of a 100W CO2-laser. Up to 5 · 106 cesium atoms are stored at a temperature of 30 µ K and a density of 3 · 1012 cm−3. The production of molecules in the lowest vibrational states of the outer well of the 0g potential (corresponding to the 6s1/26p3/2 asymptote) is investigated and saturation effects are studied. We can store up to 5 · 105 lithium atoms simultaniously with the cesium. Sympathetic cooling of the lithium leads to high pair densities which provide favorable conditions for photoassociation of heteronuclear LiCs dimers.
