The advances in the field of cold gases, e.g. in the context of BEC, causes increasing interest in fields like metrology and interferometry with atomic matter waves. Theoretical estimates indicate a significantly higher sensitivity for interferometers with cold atoms than for their light based counterparts. While at first glance clear similarities with light based interferometers are present, fundamental differences related to intrinsic particle properties appear. We present theoretical studies of a Mach-Zehnder type interferometer realized with micro-fabricated lenses and show the non-trivial dependence of the coherence properties on the input parameters. An experimental setup for measuring the interference with guided atoms is also presented.
