Characterization of White Light Generated in Flame-drawn Tapered Fibers — •Jörn Teipel and Harald Giessen — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Universität Bonn, Wegelerstr. 8, 53115 Bonn

Supercontinuum generation in photonic fibers has generated much attention over the last five years. We generated an almost two octaves broad supercontinuum spectra in self-made tapered fibers by femtosecond pulses from an unamplified Ti:sapphire laser. The typical waist length varies between 15 and 90mm and the waist diameter ranges from 1.2 to 3mm. We present measurements on the shape and width of the supercontinuum spectra and how they depend on waist length, waist diameter, input power, pulse duration and input wavelength. The variation of these parameters leads to different intensities in the fiber and to a different group velocity dispersion GVD. Higher intensities implicate a higher nonlinearity in the fiber waist which results in a broader spectrum. The input wavelength has to be in the anomalous disperion regime in order to obtain a supercontinuum. It has been shown that an increasing anomalous dispersion leads to a broadening of the spectra.
