Properties of Cw Raman Lasers in molecular iodine — •M. Klug and B. Wellegehausen — Institut für Quantenoptik, Universität Hannover, Welfengarten 1, D-30167 Hannover, Germany

Molecular iodine is well suited for the operation of low threshold continuous wave Raman lasers. With a frequency doubled diode pumped monolithic Nd:YAG ring laser as pump source, Raman lasing on many lines in the spectral range between 544 nm and 1330 nm has recently been demonstrated [1]. Due to the narrow pump laser linewidth (≈ 10 kHz) and the narrow pump induced Raman gain profile (down to 100 kHz ), correspondingly narrow Raman laser linewidths are expected and can be realized, if suitable stabilisation schemes for pump and Raman laser are used. Investigations on the Raman laser properties (e.g. linewidth, shape of the output power profile) will be presented and compared with calculations of the three level system based on the density matrix formalism.
