Sources of tunable high-quality, ultra-short laser pulses in the near- and mid-infrared are an important tool in various fields of optical spectroscopy. Pulses in the picosecond domain offer the possibility of good spectral resolution while retaining a high conversion efficiency. We built a tunable source of picosecond laser pulses which completely covers the wavelength range between 1.5 and 24 µm via optical parametric amplification (OPA) and difference frequency generation (DFG). The laser system is based on a Nd:YLF oscillator / amplifier system operating at 1053 nm. The high-quality signal pulses of an PPLN OPO, pumped by the Nd:YLF oscillator, are amplified in KTP to energies of about 500 µJ. In the last conversion stage the signal and idler pulses of the OPA are difference frequency mixed in GaSe and CdSe generating mid-IR radiation up to 24 µm.
