Finite-temperature quantum properties of bosonic atoms in optical lattices — •Lev Plimak, Bernd Schmidt, and Michael Fleischhauer — Fachbereich Physik, Univ. Kaiserslautern

We discuss a numerical approach to calculate equilibrium properties of interacting Bose systems. In particular we analyze a system of strongly interacting bosons in a one-dimensional periodic lattice in the tight-binding limit described by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian [1]. By “embedding” the density-matrix renormalisation group technique of White [2] into a stochastic simulation algorithm, we propose a numerical method which is capable of treating large-size systems (i.e. with more than 100 sites) at temperatures low enough for quantum correlations to dominate thermal correlations. This regime of low temperatures and strong interactions is not easily accesible by other techniques.
