Quantum degenerate Fermi-Bose mixtures — •Christian Ospelkaus, Silke Ospelkaus-Schwarzer, Kai Bongs, and Klaus Sengstock — Institut für Laser-Physik; Jungiusstraße 9; 20355 Hamburg

Like their bosonic counterpart, dilute atomic Fermi quantum gases offer a rich phase diagram with the Pauli exclusion principle resulting in fundamentally different behaviour compared to bosonic systems.

We present progress on the realization of an experimental setup for the simultaneous creation of quantum degenerate samples of fermionic 40K and bosonic 87Rb. The apparatus is based on a double 2-species MOT design with a 2D source MOT and a 3D collection MOT. We present a scheme for selective forced microwave evaporative cooling of a laser-cooled mixed sample on the 87Rb hyperfine transition in a magnetic trap leading to sympathetic cooling of Potassium.

We will discuss planned experiments on fundamental excitations (monopole and quadrupole oscillations, single particle excitations and their influence on heating) as well as the possibility of observing solitons in Fermi and Bose-Fermi systems. These discussions will be complemented by the presentation of projected experiments on fermion-fermion and fermion-boson correlations in optical lattices which might also serve as a beneficial environment for the observation of a BCS transition.
