Laser-Induced Control of the Photofragmentation in Ammonia Molecules — •Alvaro Peralta Conde, Thorsten Peters, Klaas Bergmann, and Thomas Halfmann — Fachbereich Physik, TU Kaiserslautern, D-67663 Kaiserslautern

The control of atomic or molecular fragmentation by means of laser-matter interaction is a topic of prominent scientific interest. Especially the manipulation of molecular dissociation may be understood as a first step towards the laser-based control of chemical reactions. In our experiments we use the coherent properties of ns laser pulses to steer fragmentation processes in Ammonia (NH3). Among these are quantum interference between optical one- and three-photon transitions from the ground to an excited state in Ammonia as well as laser-induced continuum structure (LICS), i.e. the manipulation of the dissociation continuum itself. While we control quantum interference by the relative phase of the exciting radiation fields, LICS is controlled by appropriately tuning the laser frequency. We will discuss the experimental implementation of a quantum interference as well as a LICS experiment to manipulate the predissociation process NH3NH2 + H and present preliminary results.
