We present a new scheme for single photon QND measurements [1]. The method allows to distinguish the zero- and one-photon states of a quantized mode of a microwave cavity in non-destructive way. It is based on the interaction between a three level Rydberg atom and a microwave cavity. The superconducting cavity has a special toroidal geometry with high Q-factor and is sufficiently tunable. The atom interacts twice with the field. Therefore, a photon absorbed in a first section is then emitted again in a second one, leaving the cavity field unchanged. The cavity we designed and tested satisfies the experimental requirements with measured Q-factor 2× 109 at the resonance frequency 21.456 GHz. The Raby frequency of the used TE011 cavity mode is 40 KHz leading to the strong atom-field coupling necessary for the experiment. The obtained parameters allow to make ∼ 1000 separate QND measurements during the ringdown time of the cavity.
