Towards the storage of single photons using electromagnetically induced transparency — •P. Krok, A. Kuhn, and G. Rempe — Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, 85748 Garching, Germany

We investigate the possibility to use EIT as a memory or a delay line for a single photon produced by a cavity QED system [1]. Deceleration and even stopping of laser pulses has already been observed in a Bose-Einstein-condensate and a hot atomic vapor, respectively [2]. Our setup consists of a 5 cm long room-temperature absorption cell filled with Rubidium vapour and Ne buffer gas at variable pressures. For photon storage, we intend to use the atomic hyperfine levels which are employed in the photon generation process, too. We also explore new methods to separate the probe light from the strong dressing laser needed to induce EIT, since an extremely high extinction ratio is required in the single-photon regime.
