Polarisation Squeezing with a Fibre-Sagnac Interferometer — •Joel Heersink, Tobias Gaber, Stefan Lorenz, Oliver Glöckl, Natalia Korolkova, and Gerd Leuchs — Lehrstuhl für Optik Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg Staudtstr. 7 B-2 91058 Erlangen

We report on polarisation squeezing relative to the coherent state in 3 Stokes operators [1] and on -3.4 dB of genuine polarisation squeezing, that is squeezing below a polarisation minimum uncertainty state, in one of the Stokes operators. This was accomplished using the efficient amplitude squeezing source afforded by the non-linear Kerr effect of a glass fibre. Two orthogonally polarised, amplitude squeezed pulses were simultaneously generated using a double asymmetric (93:7 splitting ratio) fibre-Sagnac interferometer with 14.2 m of polarisation maintaining fibre. Genuine polarisation squeezing was observed by overlapping 2 amplitude squeezed pulses after the Sagnac loop with constant relative phase. This was achieved by the birefringence compensator before the Sagnac loop. This device is a Michelson-like interferometer in which each arm has either s or p polarisation. A static path difference between the arms balanced out the fibre birefringence. The path difference was actively controlled by fixing one end mirror to a piezo element to give a stabile polarisation squeezing source for quantum communication applications [1].
