Decoherence of molecular rotation for the optical Kerr effect — •Anicka Adelswaerd and Sascha Wallentowitz — Emmy-Noether Nachwuchsgruppe No-dqKollektive Quantenmessung und Rückkopplung an Atomen und MolekülenNo-dq, Fachbereich Physik, Universität Rostock, Universitätsplatz 3, D-18051 Rostock

In this contribution decoherence effects in the rotational degree of freedom of homonuclear diatomic molecules interacting with an off-resonant laser field are investigated. In particular we address the situation of an optical Kerr laser interacting with a superposition of angular momentum states. We solve a previously derived rotational master equation

[1] using the quantum trajectory method and study the decoherence, which is due to spontaneous Raman scattering.

A better understanding of decoherence is important in the context of experimental decoherence control. This is crucial not only for the implementation of a coherent rotational dynamics of ultracold molecules, but also in the context of preparing and manipulating degenerate molecular quantum gases. The rotational degree of freedom, being at the lowest energetic scale, thus plays an important role for the coherence time of such quantum gases.
