Recent quantum optical experiments [1] implement kicked atoms with a variety of new coherence and decoherence effects, extending the simple model of the famous delta-kicked rotor. Noise does not only destroy coherence and dynamical localization, it also – somewhat counter-intuitively – was claimed to enhance resonance peaks. We clarify the theoretical understanding of the experimental results focusing on the influence of noise due to spontaneous emission [2]. The atomic dynamics close to resonance is analyzed by means of a quasi-classical approximation where the small parameter is the detunning from exact resonance, which plays the rôle of Planck’s constant. Based on a new experimental proposal we calculate the decay of the interference signal (fidelity) of two distinct evolutions in various dynamical regimes, and present a detailed study of the noise-induced temporal decay of the signal.
