Test Mass Thermal Noise Due to Silicate Bonding — •Joshua Smith1, Syracuse University Department of Physics2, and University of Glasgow Institute for Gravitational Research31Callinstr. 38 30167 Hannover — 2Syracuse, N.Y. USA — 3Glasgow, UK

Thermal noise of mirror test masses is predicted to be the limiting noise source in the most sensitive frequency band of the GEO600 interferometer. The fluctuation-dissipation theorem says that thermal fluctuations are related to energy dissipation. Thus, to reduce test mass thermal noise one must reduce the dissipation of the test mass materials. For this reason, the GEO600 team has developed and suspended triple pendulums each having a monolithic fused silica double pendulum as its lowest stage. In these suspensions fused silica ’ears’ are attached to the test masses by hydroxy-catalysis bonding. To estimate the effect of these bonds on test mass thermal noise we measured the quality factors of bonded fused silica samples and compared them to unbonded control rods. We show that the bonds should not be the dominant noise source for GEO600 test masses.
