Formation of high-quality synthetic opals- towards 3D-photonic band-gap materials — •Hans Joachim Schöpe — Institut für Physik, Universität Mainz, Staudinger Weg 7, 55099 Mainz

Crystalline arrays of colloidal particles (sythetic opals) show interesting optical properties with potential application as new types of optical gratings, optical filters, antireflective coatings, selective solar absorbers, data storage and data processing. They further serve as a starting material of 3D photonic band gap materials. Several different methods of drying colloidal suspension have been proposed which yield large arrays. However stacking faults, point defects, dislocations, polycrystallinity and cracks are often abundant. Also the reproducibility of the results is still a challenge.

To solve this problems a fundamental understanding of the interplay of different experimental parameters is necessary. Colloidal mono- and multilayers are prepaired using different techniques, also the influence of restricted geometry and external fields are researched. We investigated the formation of the sythetic opals by light microscopy, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and light scattering. We present colloidal layers of high quality, but show also remaining problems in preparation and give new ideas to solve them.
