Gold nanodots that are arranged periodically on a dielectric waveguide material show a pronounced minimum within the plasmon absorption spectrum [1]. This effect can be explained by the formation of a new quasi-particle, a so-called waveguide-plasmon polariton [2]. This results in a photonic bandgap for these structures. The aim of our work is to experimentally and theoretically examine the influence of disorder on the optical properties of these structures. A series of samples with controlled disorder was prepared, varying the position of the gold-dots with respect to the original grid. We consider a uniform, a Gaussian and a next-neighbour distribution. Angle-resolved extinction-measurements were performed on these samples and the dispersion of the polariton was determined.
