We investigate the spectrum of resonance fluorescence of a trapped ion, which is driven by two counterpropagating laser beams in a Lambda-shaped configuration. The composite dynamics of the ion’s external and internal degrees of freedom are in the steady state. In the Lamb-Dicke regime (i.e. when the size of the motional wave packet is smaller than the lasers wavelength), the dynamics are characterized by two well-separated time scales, allowing for a coarse-grained description of the processes. In this limit we evaluate the spectrum analytically. When the lasers are tuned to a two-photon resonance, the spectrum of emission consists of two narrow sidebands of equal height. They are located at frequencies corresponding to transitions to vibrational states whose energy differs by one phonon. This feature is independent of the angle between detector and laser. We provide a physical picture of the dynamics and compare our results with the spectrum of emission of a laser-cooled two-level ion.
