Scattering Matrix Approach to Large-Scale Photonic Crystal Circuits — •Sergei F. Mingaleev and Kurt Busch — Institut für Theorie der Kondensierten Materie, Universität Karlsruhe, 76128 Karlsruhe

We propose a scattering matrix (S-matrix) approach to the modelling of large-scale Photonic Crystal circuits [1] and show that the transmission properties of a complex circuit can be completely understood on the basis of S-matrices of individual Photonic Crystal devices and waveguides which connect them. As an illustration, we calculate the properties of a double bend waveguiding structure from the S-matrices of the corresponding single bends. A comparison with numerical simulations of the complete structure reveals the validity and efficiency of this approach. We show that the effects of evanescent modes are negligible when the distance between bends exceeds three lattice periods. We also show that functional devices such as waveguide bends generally exhibit a discontinuous frequency dependence in the phases associated with their complex reflection and transmission coefficients and emphasize its importance for the adequate modelling of Photonic Crystal circuits as well as the accurate experimental determination of waveguide properties.
