Due to the very attractive dispersion properties of photonic crystals, one possible application of photonic-crystal slab waveguides is for dispersion compensation. Indeed, compared to the already existing dispersion compensators, these waveguides can be made much smaller and integrated easily. Furthermore, they offer the possibility to be tuned after fabrication for adjusting or switching their dispersion properties. Despite their very simple design, W1 waveguides can be very suitable candidates for dispersion compensation. We present the case of SOI-based photonic crystals prepared experimentally by e-beam lithography and ICP etching. Designed in a correct way these structures lead to a bandgap for even (TE-like) modes larger than 30 %. We study the influence of confinement and porosity on the group velocity in the case of a W1 waveguide made in such a SOI-based photonic-crystal slab. The computations are done using a FDTD code as well as applying two different plane-wave methods, the MIT package and a method based on a set of waveguide modes.
