Both Long Distance Quantum Communication and Quantum Computing need to store photonic information. Long Distance Quantum Communication while waiting for successful entanglement in repeaters, Quantum Computing while waiting for different steps of parallel computation to be completed. As shown in the Experiments of Phillips, Mair et al. (PRL 86, Nr. 5, 2001, p. 783) and Hau (Nature 409, 490−493 and Nature 397, 594−598) non-destructive and reversible conversion of information carried by light into a coherent atom spin wave in a gas of hot rubidium vapor is possible and can be used to store information by exploiting the strong slope of the refractive index (and resulting low, respectively zero, group velocity of light) connected with EIT (Electromagnetic Induced Transparency) in such a medium. We have build an experiment using gas cells of isotopically pure 87Rb Isotope and have been able to produce slow light with group velocities as low as 840 m/s using static EIT and stored light for at least 300 µs using dynamic EIT. Even partial and multiple readout of the pulse, preserving the pulse shape, has been possible. We will report on the current status of our experiment and give an outlook to future experiments with this setup. This work was funded by the EU-ACQUIRE project.
