Strong Correlation Effects in Cold Atomic Gases — •Markus Popp, Belen Paredes, Juan-Jose Garcia-Ripoll, and Ignacio Cirac — Max-Planck-Institut fur Quantenoptik, 85748 Garching, Germany

We study the collective quantum properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate held in an optical lattice potential. As the potential depth of the lattice is increased a quantum phase transition[1] occurs from a superfluid to a Mott insulator phase[2]. We explore ways of quantifying the entanglement in such a system and investigate the scaling of entanglement close to the quantum critical point. We also investigate the possibility of driving the atomic system into a Laughlin state and creating 1/2-anyons[3], which exhibit fractional statistics and promise novel applications in quantum information.
