We observed the formation of Bose-Einstein condensates into non-equilibrium states [1]. Our condensates are oversized as compared to equilibrium condensates and show the dynamical evolution of the quadrupole shape oscillation of regular condensates. These condensates emerge in elongated traps as the result of local thermalisation when the nucleation time is short compared to the axial oscillation time. The concept of local thermalisation arises because our thermal atomic clouds are prepared far deeper into the hydrodynamic regime as compared to previous experiments on condensate formation [2,3]. Rapid formation causes phase fluctuations which manifest themselves as stripes in the ballistic expansion picture as also observed in [4]. We introduce condensate focusing as a powerful novel method to analyse the properties of these exotic Bose-Einstein condensed gases.
