Optically Loading of a BEC beyond the weak condensation regime — •filip floegel, Luis Santos, and Maciej Lewenstein — ITP Uni Hannover, Appelstr.2 , 30167 Hannover

We have studied the optically loading of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) from a reservoir via spontaneous photon emission. We assumed a trapped thermal cloud in an electronic excited state. The BEC is considered in the electronic ground state. We include the collisional effects by using Bogoliubov equations for the atoms in the ground state trap, and additionally considered the mean-field effects on the excited state atoms. We analyze the change in temperature of the BEC after the loading process, and describe the regime where the optical pumping leads to cooling. The effect is discuss for different significant parameter regimes. We finally discuss the consequences of this work in the post-cooling of a BEC, and its application as a possible mechanism for a continuously loaded atom laser.
