A new designed Mini-Max-DOAS instrument was used for the first time during volcanic gas emission measurements in 2001. With MAX-DOAS any trace gas with sufficiently large absorption cross section in the UV-VIS wavelength range can be measured. BrO was identified in a volcanic plume for the first time. SO2 emissions were studied. In order to quantify the emission source strength (the net fluxes) from the volcano, a number of MAX-DOAS measurements were carried out. By scanning the volcanic plume the extension and the trace gas content could be derived. Mixing ratios reached up to   1 ppb BrO and   1 ppm SO2, respectively. Including wind speed data an emission rate of 350 t reactive Br/year and 1.8 105 t S/year can be estimated. Assuming a similar Br/S emission ratio for all volcanoes a global Br source strength of the order of 30000 t/year would result. This can have significant effects both for tropospheric and stratospheric chemistry.
