Abstract

Bromine monoxide (BrO) is an atmospheric constituent playing an important role in the chemistry of both the stratosphere and the troposphere, in particular in view to Ozone destruction. While stratospheric bromine chemistry seems to be well understood, many questions remain with respect to the abundance and chemistry of bromine compounds in the troposphere, both in the boundary layer and in the free troposphere.

Measurements from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) aboard the ERS-2 satellite launched since April 1995 have been analyzed for tropospheric columns of BrO over the years. In this study, these data are analyzed in view of indications for a tropospheric background of BrO. In addition, direct comparisons of some of these measurements have been made to columns retrieved from the new research instrument SCIAMACHY (SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY) launched on-board the ESA ENVISAT-1 polar orbiting platform on 1 March 2002 which provides verification for the GOME measurements and also a higher spatial resolution.
