The nuclear structure of the 42,44,46Ca isotopes is characterized by the valence neutrons in the f7/2 shell and their positions between both doubly magic 40Ca and 48Ca. From recent measurements of the g factor of the 44Ca(21+) state [1,2], yielding g=+0.167(30), sign and magnitude can only be explained assuming considerable admixtures of particle-hole excitations of the 40Ca core in the wavefunction. We have extended this study by also measuring the g factor and the lifetime of the 42Ca(21+) state employing projectile Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics combined with transient magnetic fields, the same technique as used for 44Ca. An isotopically pure 42Ca beam of 95 MeV provided by the Cologne tandem accelerator was Coulomb excited by scattering from a carbon target attached to magnetized gadolinium for precessing the nuclei in their 21+ state. Simultaneously, the lifetime was measured using the Doppler-Shift-Attenuation-Method. The results are discussed in the framework of deformed and spherical components of the wavefunction.
