We present a new development made for data acquisition and analysis of direct mass measurements of exotic nuclei circulating in the storage ring ESR at the GSI. Several different ions are stored simultaneously. To reach a sufficiently high mass resolving power (Δm/m ≈ 100000) the average revolution time (≈ 500 ns) of each stored ion has to be measured with a relative accuracy of better than 5 · 10−6. The measurements are performed with a time-of-flight detector. The circulating ions penetrate through a thin CsJ-coated carbon foil and release secondary electrons, which are detected with micro channel plates. The generated signals have rise times of less than 0.5 ns and a width of about 4 ns. We use fast sampling oscilloscopes (4 to 20 GS/s) with up to 32 megapoints memory depth to record these short signals during an observation time of up to 2 ms. The data is written to hard-disks. We developed special software to assign the signals unambiguously to the individual ions and determine their revolution time. The later can be determined with a precision of about 0.6 ps corresponding to a time resolution of 1.2 · 10−6.
