In a Coulomb excitation experiment performed at GSI, a position sensitive passivated ion-implanted junction Si-detector was used to measure the scattered heavy ions in coincidence with the emitted γ-rays. The Si-detector has the dimensions of 50×50 mm2 and a thickness of 300 µm. The total energy is read out from the backside of the detector, while the individual energies are measured at the four corners of the frontside. These four energies determine the position of the heavy ions in X- and Y-dimensions. In a calibration experiment the detector was tested with a 243 Am α-source at 5.484 MeV, resulting in a total energy resolution of 150 keV (FWHM). The contribution due to electronics was investigated with a pulser and yielded a FWHM of 60 keV. This detector, utilized in the Coulomb excitation experiment at 10% of the speed of light, gave sufficient position resolution of the heavy ions, in order to perform a Doppler-shift correction of the particles’ γ-rays. The poster will present the results of that experiment.
