A search for hyperdeformation in 126Ba using the GAMMASPHERE array at Berkeley led to an indication of a narrow ridge structure in the γ-ray continuum. This motivated a new experiment to populate high-spin states in 126Ba using the 64Ni + 64Ni reaction. A combination of the BaF2 array HECTOR and the EUROBALL array was used to measure high-fold γ-ray coincidences. The analysis shows, for the first time, low-lying GDR components at 6-14 MeV, most probably built on states in the transition region to very elongated Jacobi shapes at spins I ≃ 66-72. To look for very weak discrete γ-ray transitions of hyperdeformed bands, an experiment is planned with the full EUROBALL spectrometer. * Supported by BMBF (06 BN 907) and DFG (Hu 325/10)
