Isomerism in 96Ag and non-yrast levels in 96Pd and 95Rh, studied in β decay — •M. Kavatsyuk — GSI Darmstadt, Planckstr. 1, 64291 Darmstadt

The β decay of 96Ag (Z=47, N=49) is particularly interesting because it populates, through β-delayed γ-ray (βγ) and β-delayed proton (β p) emission, the "neutron magic" nuclei 96Pd (Z=46, N=50) and 95Rh (Z=45, N=50), respectively. This β decay was investigated at the GSI-ISOL facility by measuring positrons, X rays as well as β p and βγ radiation [1]. The γ radiation was studied by means of germanium detectors and a NaI total-absorption spectrometer (TAS), the protons by means of silicon-detector telescopes. Two β-decaying isomers in 96Ag were established to have half-lives of 4.40(6) and 6.9(6) s, and tentative spin-parity assignments of (8+) and (2+), respectively. For both isomers, the intensities of β transitions to low-lying levels of 96Pd and β p decays to levels in 95Rh were measured. Several new 96Pd levels were firmly established. The level-energies as well as their γ decays and the 96Ag → 96Pd Gamow-Teller strengths are compared to shell-model predictions. A new low-lying level in 95Rh was found at 680 keV excitation-energy. Through a comparison with shell-model predictions, this level is interpreted as the first excited 7/2+ state built on the proton 9/2+ ground-state.

The TAS measurement of the β-strength distribution of the 96Ag decay is hampered by the occurrence of a 2.2 µ s isomer in 96Pd. In order to overcome this problem, a digital pulse analysis of delayed coincidences is being developed.
