The small-area tracker of COMPASS, a high-luminosity fixed target
experiment at CERN’s SPS, includes a set of 20 large-size (31 ×
31
cm 2 ) Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors. The principles
and design of these detectors will be briefly reviewed
emphasizing the main features adopted to allow operation in a high-flux
environment. For the 2002 high-intensity
muon-beam run of COMPASS the complete set of 20 GEM
detectors was installed and succesfully commissioned. During three
months
of data taking all detectors
operated stabily at normal working conditions. We will report
on their performance during this run, with special emphasis on
efficiencies, spatial resolutions
and long-term operation. Some information on fast readout electronics
including
zero suppression, custom-made for the GEM and Silicon detectors, will
also
be given.
