New information on the 233Pa(n,f) cross-section — •A. Oberstedt — Department of Natural Sciences, Örebro University, SE-70182 Örebro

The highly β-active nuclide (T1/2=27.0 d) 233Pa is important for the design of accelerator-driven systems for energy production and nuclear waste transmutation. As reported recently the first direct measurements of the neutron induced fission cross-section were performed with mono-energetic neutrons between 1.0 and 3.0 MeV [1]. In a second campaign the measurements were extended to neutron energies ranging from 5.0 to 8.5 MeV. The experimental results will be presented together with recent model calculations with the statistical model code STATIS [2] to improve the cross-section evaluation up to the emissive fission threshold. A third experimental campaign is scheduled for Jan.-Feb. 2003, where the focus is put on the fission barrier region, i.e. around 1.2 MeV incident neutron energy as well as on the verification of the higher neutron energy data. For this experiment a new sample preparation technique based on molecular plating will be employed. A deuterium-gas cell will be used to reduce parasitic neutron sources as well as to enhance the incident neutron-flux.
