Collimated MeV jets of protons and carbon ions from the rear surface of thin foils irradiated with laser intensities up to 1019 W/cm2 are observed in experiments with the 8-TW 10-Hz MPQ ATLAS laser system. We use a Thomson parabola both to characterize the ions and to measure their respective spectrum and yield. In previous single shot experiments with high power (100 TW) laser facilities, energies of up to 5 MeV/nucleon and particle numbers reaching 1010 per MeV were observed [1]. This was explained by a modified target normal sheath acceleration mechanism. The high-repetition rate of our laser system opens up the possibility for systematic investigations of the underlying acceleration mechanism by varying experimental parameters such as target thickness and material. This will show up the capability for future applications like laser driven ion sources and particle accelerators.
