A new tracking detector consisting of straw tubes is under construction. It will be used inside the COSY time of flight detector (TOF) vacuum system. The whole detector will consist of more than 3000 straws with active volume of 0.3 m3 and area of 1 m2. It will be built in 15 double planes which are rotated sequentially by 120 degree. With tubes of 30 micron wall thickness and very light weight frames the final tracker has a total weight less than 15 kg.

We want to keep the total mass as small as possible in order to reduce straggling and secondary interactions of the measured tracks and avoid shadowing by frames, cables, amplifiers etc. .

A new method is to use over pressure in the straws which allows self-supporting straw packages without massive fixing or clamping inside the surrounding frame.

With 30 micron wall thickness of a straw tube a particle passing through the full 30 plane detector sees less than 3 mm Mylar.

The straw detector allows highly precise spatial track and strange particle decay V reconstruction with less than 200 micron spacial resolution per track.

The first results will be described.
