Tests and design of the ALICE TRD radiator — •Damian Bucher — Institut für Kernphysik, Universität Münster, Germany

In this talk we present the development of the radiator for the ALICE Transition Radiation Detector (TRD). The ALICE TRD consists of 540 individual detector modules which cover an overall area of about 750 m2. Individual modules, which consist out of a radiator followed by a drift chamber, have entrance windows with a maximum size of about 1.2*1.6 m2 which are covered by the radiators.

The radiator for this detector not only has to give a very good transition radiation yield but also acts as one of the main mechanical supporting structures of the detector modules. Results of the transition radiation performance of different radiator materials as well as detailed test beam studies of the final candidates are presented. The final design of the radiator which fulfills the different requirements is discussed.
