The status of the SHIPTRAP experiment at GSI — •Michael Block and Michael Block — GSI, Planckstr.1, 64291 Darmstadt

The ion trap facility SHIPTRAP at GSI will provide isobarically clean and cool bunches of super heavy ions produced in fusion reactions at SHIP. It consists of a gas cell for stopping and thermalizing the recoil ions from SHIP, a rfq buncher for accumulating, cooling and bunching of stopped ions, and a Penning trap system for isobaric purification and precision mass measurements. SHIPTRAP is installed directly behind the SHIP velocity filter. The physics programme comprises e.g. precision mass spectroscopy, nuclear spectroscopy, laser spectroscopy and chemistry of transuranium elements and will enable precise measurements of nuclides that cannot be produced at other facilities such as ISOLDE. In the near future an additional cryogenic trap system for a highly sensitive FT-ICR detection will be installed. This will allow for precision measurements even for elements with extremely low production cross sections. In this contribution the current status of the SHIPTRAP experiment will be discussed.
