Signature of Nucleon–Nucleon Fusion/Fission for TLab(pp)>1.25 GeV — •D. Bayansan, A. Funk, St. Wirsching, and H.V. von Geramb — Kerntheorie, Uiversität Hamburg

Medium energy nucleon-nucleon scattering, pp data and their partial wave phase shift analysis by Arndt et al., suggest a transition from a repulsive core scattering into a short range attraction or barrier penetration scattering mechanism. The 1S0,3P0,3P1 partial waves, for 1 <TLab< 3 GeV, display the effect most clearly. They lend support to a fusion/fission interpretation in which the two nucleons fuse into a dibaryon with sequential fission when the relative kinetic energy suffices to displace the valence quark contents in momentum space and antisymmetrization loses to generate repulsion. We study diverse potential models, of which most reliable are Dirac’s instant and front form dynamics of two nucleon scattering, to find support for this interpretation. There is little doubt, RGM quark- and other microscopic-models may fit this data, but we searched with phenomenological instant form potentials the phase shift data. Unfortunately, np scattering is still limited to TLab<1.2 GeV, for the benefit, medium energy photo disintegration of the deuteron knows of extensive experimental and theoretical results and about high momentum (short range) emergent QCD structures of the deuteron as a substitute for NN systems.
