Within a Green’s functions approach, the neutron and the proton properties are studied in both symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter at low temperature, using realistic NN potentials.

As a starting point, we use spectral functions that are calculated from the off-shell nuclear self-energy in a quasi-particle picture with self-consistent Brueckner-Hartree-Fock energy spectra as input. We then go beyond the quasi-particle picture and account for the depletion of the hole state in the many-body system by constructing the real and the imaginary part of the two-particle propagator that appears in the ladder-equation for the effective interaction from these single-particle spectral functions. A self-consistent spectral function requires an iterative procedure that includes the solution of the Galitskii-Feynman equation, the calculation of the nuclear self-energy and the solution of the Dyson equation in each iteration cycle.

Results of the Green’s functions approach are compared to the corresponding predictions of the quasi-particle approach and the conventional Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results.
