At its galactic itinerary the solar system is touched by highly variable galactic enviroments. Due to its orbital revolution around the galactic center, the solar system periodically crosses the spiral arms of our galactic plane and thereby experiences pronounced environmental changes. Gas densities, magnetic fields, and galactic cosmic ray intensities are higher compared to interarm conditions. Here we develop a theoretical calculation to describe the average cosmic ray spectrum for regions inside and outside galactic arms. This then allows us to predict how passages of the solar system through galactic arms should be reflected in enhanced particle irradiation of the earthś atmosphere and in enhanced atmospheric Be-10 production rates.
