Generation of Energetic Electrons at the Termination Shock During Solar Flares - RHESSI Results — •Gottfried Mann, Henry Aurass, and Alexander Warmuth — Astrophysikalisches Institut Potsdam, An der Sternwarte 16, D-14482 Potsdam, Germany
During flares in the solar corona magnetic field energy is converted by reconnection into heating of the ambient plasma, mass motions, and energetic particles. The plasma outflow from the reconnection site can establish a shock wave, i. e. the so-called termination shock, at which electrons can be accelerated. During the solar event on July 18, 2002 the hard X-ray data observed by the RHESSI satellite and the solar radio radiation recorded in the range 40-800 MHz show signatures of energetic electrons generated by such a termination shock. Theoretical studies are compared with the radio and RHESSI observations
