The development of repetitive fast closing switches is of growing interest in many fields of application. A simple spark gap switch has been designed and built in order to investigate the switching behaviour of a high pressure spark gap at very small electrode distance. The switch is operated in environmental air at atmospheric pressure. Moderate voltages up to several kilo volts have been applied at the electrodes and the electrode gap distance has been varied between 100 micrometers up to 500 micrometers. We have studied the breakdown characteristics of the spark discharge, current rise time and pulse duration dependent on various parameters. Discharge modes which have been observed during spark gap operation will be discussed. Further experiments have been performed in a sealed test chamber. First results using various discharge gases at various pressures will be presented.
