Mercury plasmas are important for lighting applications. Recent investigations consider zinc as a possible candidate to replace the toxic mercury. Usually, high-pressure mercury plasmas are considered to be in LTE, i.e. the existence of a unique temperature is presupposed. However, under non-LTE conditions the distribution of atoms over the excited states can not be characterized by a single temperature. The purpose of this study is to obtain the excitation and the electron temperatures in HID lamps with Hg and Zn, to check the LTE assumption. HIDs have been studied by emission spectroscopy. The distribution temperatures are obtained from the self-reversed lines Hg 4047, 4358, and 5461Å, and Zn 4680, 4722, and 4810Å applying the method developed in [1]. This method is free of any LTE assumptions and allows to evaluate these temperatures in the hottest discharge regions. The results show a significant deviation from LTE even at pressures above 30 bars. However, the results are sensitive to the distribution temperatures resulting from the observations of Hg4047Å and Zn4680Å spectral lines and further experiments with a higher spectral resolution are necessary.
