Nucleon-induced pre-equilibrium reactions are of increased interest partly as a study case for nuclear equlibration, partly because of applications in accelerator-driven systems. A quantum-mechanical approach is provided by the Statistical Multistep Direct Reaction Method, which describes the reaction as a sequence of direct reaction steps, with certain statistical assumptions on the nature of the nuclear states. In particular, in the TUL variant of the method, the strength distribution in the continuum is calculated from an averaged microscopic many-body approach, so that collective and statistical aspects are taken into acount simultaneously. The method has been applied to recent nucleon-induced charge exchange reactions in the energy range of 20-100 MeV. It is found that the method including two steps describes the excitation spectra well for excitation energies up to 20 MeV and not too large angles. It is discussed which other mechanisms may play a role at more inelastic processes.
