Performance of the large straw drift trackers in Compass — •Alexander Zvyagin — CERN CH-1211 Geneve 23

The COMPASS experiment at CERN investigates the interaction of a polarised muon beam of 160 GeV/c momentum with a polarised nucleon target in order to measure the polarised gluon structure △ G function of the nucleon. The key reaction is the photon gluon fusion into charm anticharm. In the detection of the sequential decay of D-mesons D*D0 π, D0K π a primary role is played by the large area tracking detectors. Among them there are 30 layers of straw drift detectors with an area of ≈ 10 m2 and ≈ 400 channels each. To obtain the desired 15 MeV mass resolution of D-mesons the spatial resolution of straw detector layer should be better then 300 µ m. The talk will concentrate on the performance of the straw detectors in the 2002 and 2003 year runs.
