Particle Identification with the PANDA detector at GSI — •Carsten Schwarz — GSI, 64291 Darmstadt, Germany

One of the objectives of the future GSI project is the research with high luminosity antiproton beams in a high energy storage ring (HESR). The interactions with an internal hydrogen or nuclear target will be measured with the nearly hermetic PANDA detector, which can not only leptonic and electromagnetic decay channels identify but also hadronic final states by tracking the reaction products in a magnetic field. The particle identification is performed by two ring imaging Cherenkov counters, one proximity focussing detector in forward direction, and for larger angles, one using internal reflection of the photons (DIRC). They aim for good p/K separation over a large momentum region. Simulation results and technical issues like radiator choice, quality requirements, optics and photon readout will be discussed.
