A Novel Wavelength Shifter Application for the IceCube Optical Modules — •Elisa Resconi — DESY-Zeuthen, Platenenallee 6, D-15738 Zeuthen

The under-ice neutrino telescope IceCube will measure the flux of high energy neutrinos via the detection of the Cherenkov light produced by the neutrino induced secondary charged particles. The spectral sensitivity in the UV region of the optical modules (OMs) is limited by the transmission properties of the window of the PMT housing. The sensitivity of the OM and hence the detector performance can be enhanced by encapsulating the glass sphere with a wavelength shifter (WLS). In order to meet all the optical as well as the harsh environmental requirements of this application, an innovative material has been developed. It is composed of a UV transparent fluoropolymer and a WLS dye. The new material has been extruded into a 500 micrometer thin transparent foil and thermoformed around the glass sphere of the OM. In this talk I will discuss the Monte Carlo estimation of the potential improvement in light transmission, the design of the integration of the foil with the OM and the status of the prototype tests.
